Nagpur : A 28-year-old man was brutally stabbed to death after he set out to look for his elder brother, who had allegedly assaulted their grandmother while under the influence of alcohol, in the Ganeshpeth police station area late on Saturday night. Two of the deceased’s friends were also injured in the attack and are undergoing treatment at Mayo Hospital.
The deceased has been identified as Akshay Prakash Shette (28), a resident of Shivaji Putla in the Kotwali police station limits.
According to police, Akshay’s elder brother, Mayur Shette, was allegedly in the habit of returning home drunk and physically assaulting their grandmother. On Saturday night, after another alleged incident of assault, Akshay, accompanied by his friends Akash Patle and Ankit Chavan, went in search of Mayur to counsel him and prevent further violence.
Police said the trio could not locate Mayur but instead encountered three of his associates, leading to a heated argument and scuffle. After the altercation, Akshay and his friends left the spot and were travelling from Ashok Chowk towards Shivaji Putla.
As they reached near Morghade Homeopathy Clinic, three men identified as Ritesh alias Sonu Denge, Amol alias Bhurya Khursod and Arpit Budhe allegedly arrived on a moped and deliberately rammed the victims’ two-wheeler.
The accused then allegedly launched a violent assault on the three men. While Akash and Ankit were beaten up, Akshay was repeatedly attacked with sharp-edged weapons, inflicting grievous injuries.
All three victims were rushed to Mayo Hospital, where doctors declared Akshay dead. His two injured companions are undergoing treatment, and their condition is stated to be stable.
Ganeshpeth police have registered a case of murder and other relevant offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police have arrested Mayur Shette in connection with the case, while efforts are underway to trace and arrest the three other accused, Ritesh alias Sonu Denge, Amol alias Bhurya Khursod and Arpit Budhe.
Further investigation is in progress to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the role of each accused in the fatal assault.
