Addressing the protesters during a 'DC Office Chalo' march, SDPI national general secretary Riyaz Farangipete said that authorities have been collecting toll on an unscientific road for many years in violation of rules. Demanding the closure of the tollgate at Brahmarakootlu, he said that toll collection has been burning holes in the pockets of hundreds of travellers on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru route.
Alleging corruption in the toll collection, he said that although a large number of vehicles ply on the route, actual figures are not recorded in official records. “Isn’t it our duty to question corruption? People are being cheated by not disclosing the actual statistics pertaining to the toll collection. The SDPI considers this tollgate as unauthorised. A social audit needs to be conducted on the functioning of the toll gate. The SDPI will definitely not allow the looting of public money. We will continue our protest to ensure that the tollgate will be shut at any cost,” he said.
Riyaz raised concerns about the daily commute for district residents, particularly schoolchildren, given the existing tollgates at Talapady and Brahmarakootlu,and the proposal for new ones across the region. He called upon elected representatives of the BJP to listen to the grievances of the people. Officials of the district administration and police should hold a review meeting and take an apt decision against the tollgate, he said. He also extended the party’s support to the protests being held against the Brahmarakootlu tollgate under the leadership of former minister B Ramanath Rai.
SDPI national secretary Alphonse Franko, Mangaluru Rural district unit president Anwar Sadath Bajathur, state secretary Riyaz Kadambu and district general secretary Jamal Jokatte were present.
