Nagpur API’s death in police quarters raises question: Suicide or accidental hanging?

Nagpur : The death of Assistant Police Inspector (API) Dhnyaneshwar Jhol inside his official quarters has left investigators confronting a crucial question: Did the 35-year-old officer deliberately take his own life, or was he accidentally strangled after falling onto a makeshift swing?

Jhol, who was attached to the Applications and Protocol Department of the Nagpur Police Commissionerate, was found hanging inside his quarters in Gittikhadan around midnight on Saturday. While the initial circumstances appeared to suggest suicide, investigators have identified several unusual aspects at the scene that have prompted them to examine the possibility of an accidental hanging as well.

Police officials who inspected the quarters are reconstructing the sequence of events leading up to Jhol’s death. Particular attention is being paid to the manner in which a sari had been used to make a swing inside the house and the position in which Jhol was found.

According to preliminary findings, the swing had been installed using a sari, with one end tied to a window and the other secured to a door. Investigators suspect that Jhol may have slipped while entering the bedroom after returning home late at night. He could have fallen onto the swing, resulting in the sari becoming entangled around his neck.

What has further complicated the investigation is the reported position of his body. Officials said Jhol’s toes were touching the floor when he was found hanging. Investigators are therefore examining whether the height, position and arrangement of the sari and swing could have resulted in an accidental strangulation.

At the same time, police have not ruled out the possibility of a deliberate act or the involvement of another person. The scene has been preserved and investigators are examining the physical evidence to determine whether the circumstances are consistent with an accident, suicide or any other possibility.

Jhol’s movements and activities during the hours before his death are also being reconstructed.

On Saturday, he had reportedly gone with his family to the Swaminarayan temple. Later, he went to a party with friends, where he is said to have consumed liquor. He returned to his official residence late at night.

Police are also looking into reports of an argument between Jhol and his wife shortly before the incident. His wife had reportedly gone into the bedroom with their three-year-old twins. When she subsequently returned, she allegedly found Jhol hanging from the sari.

The children were reportedly present at the residence at the time, adding another important element to the reconstruction of the events.

Family members and colleagues rushed Jhol to a hospital after discovering him, but doctors declared him dead.

The absence of a suicide note has added to the uncertainty surrounding the case. Police have so far not found any note or other clear indication establishing that Jhol intended to take his own life.

Investigators are examining the quarters for other evidence, including the arrangement of the swing, the sari, the points where it was secured and Jhol’s position when he was found. They are also checking whether the physical evidence supports the possibility of accidental strangulation.

The post-mortem examination has indicated hanging as the cause of death, but investigators are treating the circumstances leading to the hanging as a separate question.

Police are also examining Jhol’s personal and professional circumstances to determine whether there was any possible motive for suicide or whether any recent developments could have contributed to the incident.

Jhol was originally from Jalna district. He had reportedly sought a transfer to Gadchiroli, where he wanted to serve for around two years. His transfer request was reportedly rejected by the office of the Director General of Police.

Investigators are checking whether the transfer issue, any personal circumstances or developments in his professional life had any bearing on his state of mind before his death.

For now, however, police officials are maintaining that no conclusion can be drawn.

“The exact circumstances are not clear yet. We are investigating all possible angles,” an official said.

The investigation is expected to focus on the forensic evidence, the reconstruction of Jhol’s final movements and the statements of his wife, family members, colleagues and others who were with him before he returned home. The findings will determine whether the case ultimately points towards suicide, accidental death or another explanation.
