Blindly trusting online acquaintances and agreeing to meet them at unfamiliar locations can prove costly: A 17-year-old boy, who went to meet a girl he had befriended on Instagram, found himself trapped at a deserted house near Ulsoor, where another man attacked him with a knife and escaped with his mobile phone and scooter.
Police swung into action and arrested the accused, Surya, 20, a resident of Ulsoor, Thursday.
According to the complaint filed by Vihaan (name changed), a resident of Gopalapura in Rajajinagar 6th Block, he had been in contact with Pragya (name changed) on Instagram for around six months. The two frequently exchanged messages and spoke over phone.
After exchanging personal details, the duo decided to meet. At 8.30am Wednesday, Pragya told Vihaan she was near Ulsoor and asked him to come over to meet her. Vihaan borrowed his friend’s TVS NTorq scooter and left home around 9am. He reached Ulsoor Metro station around 10am, where Pragya was waiting with another youngster. She reportedly asked Vihaan to drop her friend at another location and later they could spend time together. She didn’t reveal his name and other details to Vihaan.
According to Vihaan, the unidentified man took the scooter key, saying he would ride the two-wheeler himself.
Vihaan sat between him and Pragya as they rode to another location.
Surya stopped the scooter near a dilapidated house and went inside. He first called Pragya into the house. She went inside and, after a couple of minutes, she shouted for Vihaan to come in.
Vihaan claimed soon after he entered the first floor of the building, Surya suddenly attacked him on the head with a knife. Since he was wearing a half helmet, it protected him from serious injury. When the attacker demanded his mobile phone, Vihaan refused and tried to retort. Surya then brandished the knife again. This time, Vihaan raised his right hand to protect himself, suffering a bleeding injury to his right forearm.
The attacker then robbed Vihaan of his mobile phone and the key to the scooter. Fearing for his safety, Vihaan said he ran downstairs and escaped from the spot.
Sometime later, he searched for Pragya and the scooter but didn’t find them. He then approached Ulsoor police and filed a complaint. A case has been registered under Section 309 (robbery) of BNS. A senior officer said the investigators contacted the girl and then got details about the attacker, Surya. He has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
