As Bengaluru gears up for Independence Day on August 15, the city is ramping up security measures. A significant deployment of police personnel will be visible at key event locations. To ensure the safety of attendees, the use of advanced CCTV surveillance and metal detectors will be implemented. All visitors need to clear security checks and must refrain from bringing forbidden items.
BENGALURU: Bengaluru is set for heightened security on August 15 as the city prepares for the 80th Independence Day celebrations, with thousands of police personnel deployed across the venues hosting the day's major programmes.
The main state-level Independence Day function will be held at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground, where chief minister D K Shivakumar will hoist the national flag, review the parade and inaugurate the cultural programme.
According to news agency PTI, security personnel have been monitoring the parade ground for the past 15 days. A total of 110 CCTV cameras have been installed inside and outside the premises, with police teams assigned to keep a continuous watch on the venue.
Police are also maintaining surveillance on people staying under suspicious circumstances at hotels, lodges, shelters and other accommodation facilities across Bengaluru, officials said.
The Bengaluru police commissioner’s office said 1,100 police officers and personnel from across the city's divisions have been assigned to bandobast duties at the Independence Day venue.
The deployment includes nine DCPs, 17 ACPs, 49 inspectors, 106 sub-inspectors, 49 assistant sub-inspectors, 594 head constables and police constables, 80 women police personnel, 153 plain-clothes personnel and 29 camera personnel.
Another 483 personnel have been assigned to traffic management, taking the total deployment for security and traffic arrangements to 1,583, police said.
The security apparatus at the parade ground will also include seven Karnataka State Reserve Police/City Armed Reserve platoons, four fire tenders, three ambulances, four reserve vehicles, a Quick Reaction Team, a D-SWAT unit and a Rapid Intervention Vehicle. One Garuda Force unit has been kept on standby.
The venue has been equipped with CCTV cameras, four baggage scanners, 20 Door Frame Metal Detectors and 40 Hand-Held Metal Detectors, according to PTI.
Visitors attending the Independence Day programme will have to undergo security checks at the entry gates. Police have advised people against carrying unnecessary luggage or belongings.
Cigarettes, matchboxes, sharp objects, knives and blades, liquor bottles, narcotic substances, firecrackers, explosives, arms and weapons, as well as video and still cameras, will not be permitted inside the venue.
Police have also asked visitors to immediately alert uniformed personnel if they spot a suspicious person or object.
Parking restrictions will be imposed on several roads surrounding the Manekshaw Parade Ground as part of the traffic arrangements.
With parking space limited around the venue, Bengaluru Traffic Police have advised people to use public transport and Metro services to reach the celebrations.
Anyone requiring assistance can approach police personnel deployed in the area or call the emergency helpline 112, officials said.
Security arrangements have also been intensified for Freedom Habba, the Independence Day public celebration being organised in front of the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha.
More than 3,000 personnel, including Civil Police and Karnataka State Reserve Police personnel, will be deployed for the event, PTI reported.
People entering Vidhana Soudha will be issued colour-coded tags as part of the security arrangements.
With both the state-level ceremony at the Manekshaw Parade Ground and Freedom Habba at Vidhana Soudha drawing large crowds, police have put extensive security, surveillance and traffic measures in place across the city for August 15.
