Nagpur: Yashodhara Nagar Police have arrested three men for allegedly stealing a cow and transporting it for slaughter with the intention of selling the meat. Acting on a tip-off, the police rescued the animal and seized a car, a sharp-edged knife and two mobile phones, with the total value of the seized property estimated at around Rs 5.45 lakh.
The action was taken by the Detection Branch (DB) team of Yashodhara Nagar Police after it received confidential information that a cow had allegedly been brought to a secluded spot near a drain behind Anaf Furniture in the Sangam Nagar area for slaughter.
Acting swiftly on the information, a police team reached the spot and found three men allegedly preparing to slaughter a cow. The animal was reportedly tied in a distressed condition.
The police immediately rescued the cow and detained the three suspects.
During questioning, the accused allegedly told police that they had stolen the cow from the MIDC Police Station area and transported it in a car to the Sangam Nagar location for slaughter.
According to police, the trio allegedly planned to sell the meat after slaughtering the animal and divide the proceeds among themselves.
The arrested accused have been identified as Alfaz Ahmed alias Sobi Ansari, Sameer Ahmed Qureshi and Sheikh Shahrukh.
Police seized the cow, valued at around Rs 25,000, a Hyundai car worth approximately Rs 5 lakh, a sharp-edged knife and two mobile phones. The total value of the seized property has been estimated at around Rs 5.45 lakh.
Yashodhara Nagar Police have registered a case under the relevant provisions of law and launched further investigation. Police are also probing the alleged theft of the animal and checking whether the accused are connected to any wider cattle-slaughter or meat-selling network.
