The Executive Body of the Vidarbha Taxpayers Association (VTA), at its meeting held under the chairmanship of VTA President Shrawan Kumar Malu, expressed serious concern over the increasing overall burden of electricity costs on consumers, taxpayers and businesses across Maharashtra.
The meeting observed that electricity is an essential service and a critical input for households, MSMEs, industries, agriculture, hospitals, educational institutions and commercial establishments. The rising effective cost of electricity has a cascading impact on the cost of goods and services and ultimately affects the common consumer.
The Executive Body decided to take up the issue with the Maharashtra Government and Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) and seek a comprehensive review of the electricity tariff structure.
VTA has proposed that the review should cover not only the per-unit energy charge but the entire effective cost, including fixed and demand charges, FAC, ToD charges, wheeling charges, electricity duty and other components.
The Association also called for rationalisation of demand and fixed charges, a review of Time-of-Day (ToD) tariff timings based on actual consumption patterns, and a tariff mechanism that encourages rather than discourages investment in rooftop and captive solar power.
The Executive Body further stressed that Maharashtra’s electricity tariff should remain competitive with other States, particularly as electricity cost directly influences investment, employment and the competitiveness of Maharashtra’s businesses.
VTA President Shrawan Kumar Malu said that the Association was not seeking any preferential tariff for a particular sector, but a fair, transparent and scientifically determined system that balances the legitimate requirements of the power distribution system with the interests of consumers and taxpayers.
VTA Secretary Tejinder Singh Renu said that Government policies promoting industries, MSMEs, tourism and employment generation should be consistent with electricity tariff policies. He added that the hospitality sector was only one example of a wider issue affecting several employment-generating sectors.
The VTA Executive Body resolved to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Energy Department and MERC, seeking a comprehensive review and greater stakeholder consultation before major changes in electricity tariff structures.
“Affordable, predictable and rational electricity pricing is essential not only for businesses but also for protecting the common consumer from the cascading impact of higher costs,” the VTA stated.
